Region

Most regions are formed by volunteer parents who organize and run the program as a department in the AYSO National corporation. But there are other, special Affiliate regions allowed as well. New regions start out as Pilot until they apply for and obtain Charter status.

Department Regions
Most regions are simply a part of the National organization. Therefore, their bank accounts are owned by the National office. Information required to run the National corporation is fed up from the regions such as any miscellaneous payments requiring 1099 forms be issued. As such, the Regional Commissioner, although elected by the local board, is actually nominated to the role with the National Board of Directors making the final appointment and authorization.

Affiliate Regions
Affiliate regions are those that are licensed by the National organization to another entity such as a non-profit or city. They are offered when a symbiotic relationship exists between a local organization wishing to offer a quality youth soccer program but where they need the support and training offered by AYSO. Often, the entity will use paid staff to help run the regions board and perform functions such as registrar, treasurer, regional commissioner and maybe CVPA and Safety Director. They still enlist volunteer parents to run the coaching, referee and similar parts of the program. An affiliate region keeps ownership of the bank accounts, abides by the same principles as promoted by AYSO, and simply pays the National office fee as do other regions.
